Far from the Madding Crowd (2015)

Rating: 12A

The final of Finnbrit Film Club’s first season of classic British films sees Thomas Vinterberg's portrayal of life in late nineteenth century England. Based on the book written by Thomas Hardy, this is the fourth version of this classic story of love across class barriers in rural southern England, this one released 100 years after the first, silent one!

Starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, Juno Temple and Michel Sheen, this version scored 71/100 with Metacritic, and rivals the film made with Julie Christie fifty years earlier.

Fee 3€ for Finnbrit members and 5€ for non-members.

The English Book Club

Begin: 25.04.2018, 18:00
End: 25.04.2018, 20:00
Location: Fredrikinkatu 20 A 9, 00120 Helsinki

The English Book Club returns for its fourth season already! As usual, we kick off the year with the oldest text by reading Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), a Victorian novel recently made into a feature film. It is followed by Aldous Huxley’s dystopian classic Brave New World (1931), a long-awaited read among the book club members. March is dedicated to Sylvia Plath’s only novel The Bell Jar (1963), after which we move onto two books by Nobel laureates: Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987) in April, and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005) in May.

24.1. Thomas Hardy: Far from the Madding Crowd
21.2. Aldous Huxley: Brave New World
21.3. Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar
25.4. Toni Morrison: Beloved
23.5. Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go

The meetings begin at 18:00 and end at 20:00. The group is free for FINNBRIT members and just 20€ for the series of five meetings for non-members.
