The English Book Club

Begin: 23.05.2018, 18:00
End: 23.05.2018, 20:00
Location: Fredrikinkatu 20 A 9, 00120 Helsinki

The English Book Club returns for its fourth season already! As usual, we kick off the year with the oldest text by reading Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), a Victorian novel recently made into a feature film. It is followed by Aldous Huxley’s dystopian classic Brave New World (1931), a long-awaited read among the book club members. March is dedicated to Sylvia Plath’s only novel The Bell Jar (1963), after which we move onto two books by Nobel laureates: Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987) in April, and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005) in May.

24.1. Thomas Hardy: Far from the Madding Crowd
21.2. Aldous Huxley: Brave New World
21.3. Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar
25.4. Toni Morrison: Beloved
23.5. Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go

The meetings begin at 18:00 and end at 20:00. The group is free for FINNBRIT members and just 20€ for the series of five meetings for non-members.

KIASMA – Folk Wisdom, Grayson Perry

Begin: 30.05.2018, 17:00
Location: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma

Award-winning British artist Grayson Perry is a perceptive commentator on contemporary society and culture. His show at Kiasma consists of large tapestries on unexpected subjects: Brexit, aesthetic tastes and masculine ideals, as well as the artist’s personal life. In addition to tapestries, it also includes ceramics and pieces made of cast iron and bronze.

The Folk Wisdom exhibition showcases Perry’s work from the last two decades. Folk wisdom consists of common-sense beliefs passed down orally through generations of ordinary people. Grayson Perry explores subjects that are universally human: identity, gender, social status, sexuality and religion.

Grayson Perry was born in Chelmsford, UK, in 1960. He is a versatile artist and the recipient of many awards and accolades, including Britain’s foremost art award, the Turner Prize (2003). He was made member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2012.

The 30 May is Kiasma’s 20th anniversary.

The price is 14€ which includes a 60-minute guided tour in English of the exhibition.

After the tour, if you wish, we can move on to a nearby venue for a drink and a chat about the exhibition. https://kiasma.fi/nayttelyt/grayson-perry/
